Types of commercial scales

• Compact bench scales weigh small quantities precisely, for recipes, spices, pastry and portioning at the bench.
• Portion scales weigh larger quantities, up to 30kg, on a stainless steel pan. A waterproof keypad suits wet prep areas, and a dual display lets staff and customers both read the weight.
• Platform scales weigh heavy loads like deliveries, sacks of flour and carcass meat, up to 150kg. A trolley scale has wheels, so you can take it to where the goods are.

Choosing a scale

• Capacity: choose a scale whose capacity sits comfortably above your heaviest load.
• Division: the division is the smallest step the scale reads. 0.1g suits spices and pastry, 1g suits portions, and 50g is fine for checking deliveries.
• Platform size: the pan or platform should fit the containers and trays you weigh in.
• Functions: tare zeroes out the weight of the container, and counting mode counts identical items by weight.
• Power: rechargeable scales work anywhere, without a power lead across the bench.
• Trade use: if you sell goods by weight, Australian law requires a trade approved scale. See the FAQs below.

Commercial scale FAQs

Can I use these scales to sell goods by weight?

No. These scales are for portion control, recipes and weighing stock. If you sell goods by weight, Australian law requires a trade approved scale, and these are not listed as trade approved.

How long does the battery last?

All three have built-in rechargeable batteries. The PSC0022 runs for over 4 weeks per charge, the PSC9502 for over 200 hours, and the PSC9215 for about 200 hours.

Are they waterproof?

The PSC9502 portion scale and the PSC9215 platform scale have waterproof keypads. Don't hose down or submerge any scale; wipe it clean instead.

What warranty applies?

Vitras scales have a 12 month back to base warranty.
