Types of commercial food slicer

  • Manual gravity feed slicers: the product sits on an inclined carriage that you push across the blade, with gravity holding it against the gauge plate. They suit delis, butchers and kitchens slicing meat, cheese and smallgoods to order.
  • Automatic slicers: a motor drives the carriage, so the slicer can work through a whole piece at a set speed while staff do other jobs.
  • Vertical slicers with depositing: slices are laid out automatically in stacks or overlapping patterns, ready for packing or service, without hand contact.
  • Industrial multi-slicers: high-speed production slicers that bulk slice, stack or shingle meat, cheese, vegetables and bakery products on food manufacturing lines.

Choosing a food slicer

  • Blade diameter: a larger blade (250 to 330mm on our deli slicers) handles bigger products and stays sharp for longer.
  • Maximum product size: check the width, height and round diameter the carriage can take.
  • Slice thickness: most deli slicers go from paper thin up to about 24mm.
  • Fresh or frozen: some slicers are built for frozen or cooked meats and others for fresh raw meat, so check the product page before you buy.
  • Hygiene and safety: smooth surfaces, removable parts and blade guards make cleaning quicker and safer.
  • Manual or automatic: automatic models pay off where staff slice for long periods each day.

Food slicer FAQs

What is a gravity feed slicer?

The carriage is tilted, so the weight of the product holds it against the gauge plate while it slices. It takes less effort than a flat carriage and gives more even slices.

Do these slicers plug into a normal power point?

Bizerba and Yasaki slicers run on 240V single phase power. The large Grote 530 needs a three phase supply.
