Types of commercial coffee machines

  • Traditional espresso machines have group heads where the barista doses, tamps and extracts each shot and textures milk with a steam wand. PID temperature control and multi-boiler designs keep shots consistent through busy service.
  • Fully automatic coffee machines grind, extract and pour each drink at the touch of a button, so every coffee is the same no matter who makes it.

Fully automatic commercial coffee machines

A fully automatic (super-automatic) coffee machine grinds, doses, tamps and extracts each shot itself, then textures the milk and pours the finished drink at the touch of a button. Every coffee comes out the same no matter who is making it, so these machines suit busy cafes, hotels, restaurants, offices, convenience stores and self-service venues where speed and consistency matter more than hand-made latte art.

Choosing a commercial coffee machine

  • Output: check how many espressos, coffees and cappuccinos the machine can make per hour. A single Black&White4 makes up to 240 espressos an hour, and the TwinTower doubles that.
  • Groups: for a traditional espresso machine, choose 2 groups for most cafes and 3 groups for high-volume venues with more than one barista.
  • Grinders: two grinders let you offer two coffees, such as a house blend and a decaf or single origin.
  • Milk system: a built-in milk fridge keeps milk cold beside the machine. Dual milk lets you run dairy and plant-based milk, and cold foam opens up iced drinks.
  • Steam wand: models with a steam wand let baristas texture milk by hand as well.
  • Powder unit: adds hot chocolate and other powdered drinks.
  • Power and water: full-size Black&White4 machines need a dedicated 32 amp supply, a mains water connection and a drain; the Compact runs on 15 amp. Traditional espresso machines also need mains water and a drain, and larger models need three-phase power.

Commercial coffee machine FAQs

Do commercial coffee machines need plumbing?

Yes. Espresso machines and Thermoplan machines connect to a mains water supply and a drain, and need a suitable power circuit. Installation should be done by a licensed plumber and electrician.

Can you install my espresso machine?

For Bezzera machines, our Bezzera installation pack covers installation with a pressure limiting valve, a Brita filter and a bench test, in the NSW, QLD and VIC service areas.

Can a fully automatic machine make good milk coffee?

Yes. The Black&White4 textures milk automatically to a set consistency and temperature, so every flat white or cappuccino is the same, and models with a steam wand also allow manual texturing.

Do they clean themselves?

Black&White4 machines have an automatic cleaning program for the coffee and milk systems, with cleaning reminders built in.
